i carry you with me
2017-2018
Glazed Terracotta, Plaster and Wood
40 x 40 x 10 cm
Developed as part of a six-month long process of artistic investigation, this artwork was born out of my struggle to come to terms with a loved one’s sudden heart operation in end-2017, halfway across the world, and my attempts to process the homesickness and grief that followed.
Glazed on the heart are layers of my inner and interpersonal conversations regarding the incident, highlighting the vast difference between our private thoughts and the public self that we show to those around us.
A fragile ceramic heart, severed in half and overwhelmed with words, cradled in a pair of hands, ‘I carry you with me’ was my attempt to grasp at the idea that home is where the heart is, and to find healing in the process.
